Program Information

The Professional Science Masters (PSM) is a new kind of degree that prepares graduates for work in active scientific settings, combines technical competencies with workforce skills and leads to careers outside of those normally associated with academia. In 2007, the University of South Florida was the first of 11 currently participating Florida universities to initiate the PSM model in the field of Biotechnology. There are currently 33 PSM programs operating in the state of Florida. The USF PSM program in Biotechnology is designed for students who want to pursue a science-based career degree that will prepare them for advancement into leadership positions in innovation-based companies. The USF PSM program is designed to allow students to engage in advanced training in Biotechnology while developing workplace skills highly valued by employers. Employers find that the cross-training aspects of the USF PSM Biotechnology program produces graduates that deliver a superior return on their investment. The curriculum is designed with input from employers to support present and future professional career opportunities in areas contributing to economic competitiveness and innovation. In addition, the 3-4 semester program emphasizes four elements: 1) in-depth study in Biotechnology; 2) an industry internship; 3) professional development courses intended to emphasize written and oral communication, leadership, business and team-building skills and 4) an industry advisory board. We are currently recruiting highly motivated students. Interested students are encouraged to contact the program director, Dr. David Mitchell, via the email address:

Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of College and Schools. The Biotechnology Program has also been recognized as a “Professional Science Master’s Program” by the U.S. Council of Graduate Schools.
